In 1990, Jennifer Leake stepped away from a successful career as a sales manager and trainer to take on a new role: solopreneur.
As the owner of Assessment Pros, she faced all the challenges of being a new consultant. She quickly learned that no matter what other skills and talents she might excel at, the success of her new business depended primarily on one factor–her ability to find and sign new clients.
By concentrating her attention on developing that skill, Jennifer was able to grow Assessment Pros into a profitable start-up. But just as she was beginning to feel established, fate took a turn. Jennifer was forced to relocate to a new city where she had no established connections. She was once again a start-up.
Using what she'd learned in her first start-up, Jennifer re-established Assessment Pros and once again built it up to profitability. And once again, found she had to move.
The saying goes that the third time's the charm, and indeed, in her third start-up with Assessment Pros, Jennifer Leake discovered she'd become an expert at quickly building up a client base from scratch.
"Moving so often forced me to excel at networking," she states. "I learned to walk into any new territory, pick up the phone, start introducing myself to people and begin building relationships."
Fast forward to 2008, when Jennifer saw a shift in the workforce. Baby boomers were retiring at a faster rate than the younger workforce could fill the need for labor, knowledge and experience. Businesses felt the need for consultants to help fill this void. The consulting profession was in demand and poised to grow.
But the later downward turn in the economy began to force many self-employed consultants out of business. "These people were intelligent, skilled consultants that had so much to offer their clients. But they didn't know how to grow their client base. And when you're a self-employed consultant, every day you go without finding a new client puts you one step closer to being out of business."
Saddened by the high failure rate of both new and established consultants, Jennifer dreamed of building a community where consultants could learn what they needed not just to survive, but to thrive. From that dream came Consultants Gold, Inc.
